A Small Island With a Big Personality
Fogo Island rises straight out of the Atlantic to an active volcano, with São Filipe's colonial streets tucked along the cliffside below. It's compact, walkable, and easy to fall in love with in a single afternoon.
Most visitors base themselves in São Filipe — close to restaurants, the harbor, and Casinha Nova — and take day trips up to the volcano or out to the black-sand beaches nearby.
Planning Your Flight to Fogo
Flights
Fly into São Filipe Airport (SFL) via a connection through Praia (RAI), Cabo Verde's capital. Domestic flights run several times a week — book ahead in high season.
Entry Requirements
Most visitors need a Cabo Verde entry visa, easily arranged online before you travel or on arrival at the airport. Check requirements for your nationality in advance.
Arriving in São Filipe
The airport sits just minutes from town. Taxis meet every flight, and we're happy to help arrange your pickup straight to Casinha Nova.
How to Move Around São Filipe & Beyond
-
Shared Aluguers
Shared minivans (aluguers) connect São Filipe to villages across the island for just a few dollars a ride — the local way to travel.
-
Renting a Car
A rental car gives you the freedom to reach Cha das Caldeiras and the volcano trailhead on your own schedule. Roads are steep but well paved.
-
On Foot
São Filipe itself is best explored on foot — the harbor, restaurants, and viewpoints are all within a short, walkable stretch of town.
Weather, Money & a Few Words of Kriolu
When to Go
November to June brings warm, dry days — ideal for the volcano hike and beach time. Pack layers for cooler evenings up at altitude.
Currency & Cards
The Cabo Verdean escudo (CVE) is standard; euros are widely accepted too. Bring some cash — card machines are limited outside São Filipe.
Language
Portuguese and Cape Verdean Kriolu are spoken here. A friendly "Obrigadu" (thank you) goes a long way with locals.
